Akon is acknowledged as one of the most successful and versatile R&B singers of this generation. According to Forbes, his gross income is over 30 million dollars a year, but that would be quite possible for an accomplished singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and businessman. Akon began writing and recording music tracks in his home studio. Then on 2004, his tapes found their way to the executives at Universal and surely Akon's unique mixture of his West-African-style, skills and talents caught their attention. Akon's solo debut album, Trouble was released on June 29, 2004. It was the first release of his record label Konvict Music. His debut single “Locked Up" which is said to be inspired from his stint in prison for ‘theft auto’, reached the top 10 in the U.S. and the top five in the UK.. It has also the songs “Locked Up”, “Lonely”, “Pot of Gold”, “Ghetto” and “Belly Dancer”. He released the single "Lonely" in 2005, which reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the UK, Australia and Germany charts. Then he released another single, “Moonshine” which featured a New Zealand rapper, which was number one in the New Zealand charts.
Akon's second album, Konvicted was released on November 14, 2006 with the first single “Smack That” featuring Eminem became number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. The second single "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg was Akon’s first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. However, it was his third single "Don't Matter" that earned him his first solo number one single. When he released a Platinum (deluxe) edition of the album, a fifth single "Sorry, Blame It on Me" debuted at numder seven on the Hot 100. The final single of that album was "Never Took the Time." Akon broke a record on the Hot 100, as he achieved the largest climb in the chart's 48-year-history with "Smack That", jumping from number 95 to 7.
On December 2, 2008, Akon realeased Freedom which included the singles: "Right Now (Na Na Na)", "I'm So Paid" (featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy), "Beautiful" (featuring Kardinal Offishall and Colby O'Donis) and "We Don't Care". Akon released song called "Cry Out Of Joy” as tribute to The King Of Pop Michael Jackson, whom Akon was working with. Akon, who is a son of the famed percussionist Mor Thiam, was raised in a musical setting. In his early years in Dakar, Senegal, he was taught to play percussions and along with other instruments—the violin and keyboard. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri but he lived in Senegal until the age of 7, and moved permanently to New Jersey when he was 15 years old.
Although he practically grew up in music, it was only during Akon’s so-called jail events that count up for three years, that he came to realize his music abilities and appreciate his rich musical background. Akon's music style is quite a unique blend. His first album, Trouble (2004) is said to be a hybrid of his sleek West-African-style, plus his East Coast and Southern skills. His first single from that debut album made him a household name since 2004. "Smack That" which is the single of his second album Konvicted, was nominated in a Grammy; followed by a third album in 2008, Freedom.
