Akon, who is a son of the famed percussionist Mor Thiam, was raised in a musical setting. In his early years in Dakar, Senegal, he was taught to play percussions and along with other instruments—the violin and keyboard. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri but he lived in Senegal until the age of 7, and moved permanently to New Jersey when he was 15 years old.

Although he practically grew up in music, it was only during Akon’s so-called jail events that count up for three years, that he came to realize his music abilities and appreciate his rich musical background. Akon's music style is quite a unique blend. His first album, Trouble (2004) is said to be a hybrid of his sleek West-African-style, plus his East Coast and Southern skills. His first single from that debut album made him a household name since 2004. "Smack That" which is the single of his second album Konvicted, was nominated in a Grammy; followed by a third album in 2008, Freedom.
Akon has s’ ince then sing with other artists, credited for about 300 guests appearances and graced concerts all over the globe. Here is the list of his previous tours:

This year, he collaborated with over 70 artists for the "We Are the World: 25 for Haiti", a charity single in aid of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He also penetrated into the Indian market, working with composers Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani for the soundtrack of Bollywood’s action film Ra One. Last January 27, 2010 Akon performed on the reality show Big Brother Brazil when he had a Brazilian Mini-Tour (January 2010). He had a concert last June 5th at Cape Town Grand Casino and is set to have another on July 29 at Budapest, Hungary. His fourth album called Stadium Music was released this 2010. akonmusic.blogsot.com
