Akon Bio

Aliaune Damala Thiam aka Akon was born on April 30, 1973 at St. Louis, Missouri but spent most of his childhood in Dakar, Senegal. His father, legendary percussionist and jazz musician Mor Thiam, taught him to play several instruments like violin and keyboard and also includes the djembe, a traditional African drum. He was seven when their family returned to the United States but he was already fifteen years old when they settled in New Jersey.

Akon had troubles as a youth in New Jersey and he was eventually jailed, where he spent many shorter sentences that add up to three years. It was during that time when he worked on his musical ideas, which eventually turned his life around. Upon release, he began to channel his energy into writing and recording his own music in a home studio. In no time, the tapes found their way to the executives of SRC/Universal, and eventually released Akon's debut LP entitled Trouble in June 2004. His debut album which is a dynamic a collection of songs creatively reflects the ups and downs of Akon’s life experiences. The album is a crafty blend of soulful hip-hop empowered by his silky, West African-styled vocals. The success of the album’s first single "Locked Up" made him an instant star, and was sought after as a collaborator and opening acts at concerts. Konvicted, his second album was released in November 2006, and two of album's singles, "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That," made their way to the peak of the Billboard charts. With regards to his personal life, he has been rumored to have three wives, however he has since exposed that he only has one, named Tomeka. Akon claims that he has great relationships with all of his six children, from three different women, and wishes to keep his family concealed from the public eye. His religion is Islam which provided him direction on how he acts among others in life.
